Oct19Hype check Google's Gemini agent for work Can a small team put Google's new Gemini agent to work yet?
Google is calling its new Gemini agent a coworker you hand goals to, so I went through the announcement and the early coverage to see what a small team could do with it today.
Gemini agent is a single assistant Google Cloud announced on October 8 at its Gemini at Work event. It works inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive and Calendar, and 9to5Google reports you can call it by typing @Gemini. It can connect to outside tools like Slack, Microsoft 365, Salesforce and Jira. Google also describes coworker agents that get their own identity and company email address and act under that identity.
Google's pitch is that you give it an objective instead of step-by-step instructions, and it plans the work and hands pieces to sub-agents, then keeps going for hours or days after you close your laptop. One example from launch coverage has it scheduling a team meeting by finding attendees in a chat space and coordinating times over email.
According to 9to5Google, it's in private preview for select customers, and wider availability is coming to Workspace customers on select Business and Enterprise plans. Google's own announcement doesn't say who can get it today, and neither source gives a date, the plan names or a price. I couldn't find independent hands-on testing, so the long-running task claims are Google's own description.
A team already living in Google Workspace should keep an eye on which plans it lands in, since that's where it could save real time. Teams on Microsoft 365 or anything else can ignore it for now, and nobody should change plans or tools in anticipation.
You can't buy it or try it unless you're in the preview, and there's no price to weigh. Check back once Google says which Workspace plans include it and what it costs.
